Sant’Anna School has been ranked in the top 10 in the Times Higher Education (THE) best small universities 2018 world rankings. Sant’Anna School provides education for less than 5,000 outstanding students in (at least) four broad subject areas. According to the Times Higher Education Best Small Universities Rankings published in August 2018, Sant’Anna School is No. 3 among research universities that offer a variety of academic disciplines including subjects from engineering, technology, medicine, life sciences and social sciences.

Sant’Anna School placed sixth in the 2017 'Small Best Universities in the World' rankings. The criteria for inclusion in the rankings require the university to be listed in the Times Higher Education’s overall World University Rankings, have a comprehensive approach to education and be small (the average number of students at an institution in the 2018 world’s best small universities ranking is approximately 3,258). THE World University Rankings take into account high-quality performance across teaching, research, citations, international outlook and industry income in the higher education sector across 15 countries.

This year, the US California Institute of Technology (Caltech) is the highest-ranked university. Ecole Polytechnique in France is ranked second and another Italian institution, the Libera Università di Bolzano, climbed one place from its position in the ranking 2017 and placed ninth.
